Canada Is About To Pass Sopa’s Evil Little Brother. Politely.

latvijas-lacplesis:

“I’m a Canadian.

We’re a quiet bunch; prone to enjoying hockey, drinking stronger beer than our friends south of the border, and lovers of fries smothered in cheese curds and gravy.

We also, apparently, have an inferiority complex when it comes to being evil dirt bags, because we’ve decided to pass our very own version of SOPA up here.

Only better*

Meet Bill-C11. Formerly Bill C-32. (I think they thought if they made the number lower people would care less about it?)

{…}

But, as innocuous as it sounds, C-11 does a whole lot that SOPA did with a few extra twists you might not find in the Wikipedia write-up.

Like your PVR? You can’t keep it under C-11.

Like ripping CDs to your iPod? Say bye-bye.

Hey, do you want to be able to unlock your $500 smartphone and take it to a provider less dedicated to violating your wallet? That won’t be allowed either.

Did you get accused of internet piracy but no evidence has been presented and a trial date hasn’t even been set? Under C-11 your ISP will now be forced to terminate your internet access.

And people say that governments can’t be bought.

{…}

There are only 14 days left people. Get active.”

Send a letter to your Member of Parliament now. The letters are prewritten, you just need to click send.

Come on non-Canadian people, please signal boost this for your Canadian friends.

For the love of god help us.

Not Canadian but signal boost.

Jesus fucking christ. “Hey I know! Let’s make sharing and caring really difficult for the people under us so they spend less time being happy and more time wasting their days away working in misery, while still taking their money.” Because I don’t already pay for cable but miss all my shows due to school/work. Right. Logic.

Mnemonic Ntjeru: The real reason MegaUpload was shut down?

In December of 2011, it was reported by Digital Music News that the creators of MegaUpload were rolling out plans for a new cloud based music service that had the potential to change the music industry.

Called Megabox, it would have created an alternative to record labels as a means for artists to sell their music on-line, cut out the middle man and allow artists to keep 90 percent of their earnings.

They were also going to have a program called Megakey that allowed artists to offer their music free and still generate revenue.

This came just a week or so after Universal filed to have a promotional video by Megaupload removed from youtube that featured A list artists, that Universal had absolutely no claim to.

Was Megaupload taken down because it was a threat to an existing business model, that makes a lot of people a lot of money?

It’s starting to look that way.

Also, for your reading enjoyment, here is an interview with the founder of Megaupload concerning the youtube video take down, and his previous problems with Universal.

My own humble opinion on tv/film piracy

mrsloki:

Many of you, myself included, have been heavily effected by the current economic state of the world.

I have been living in poverty my entire life, it’s just something I’ve come to accept until I’m able to provide for myself.

And when you’re struggling just to buy food and pay the bills, there is little money left to pay for entertainment; theaters, rented movies, cable, netflix or what have you.

But you need to have something in your life to distract you from how miserable your life is. Or how much it makes you struggle, damages you in inches with the simple fact that you can’t provide for yourself and your family.

You just want to watch a movie for an hour and a half; be immersed in a story that isn’t yours and just have fun.

Sometimes that one movie, spent with friends or just by yourself can pick you up, lighten your day so you can continue to try and make your life better for yourself.

I know that’s how they make me feel.

I think the reason, in this impoverished era of the working poor, we illegally download things because we can’t afford to buy them. And I’m not making this an excuse for everyone, I know there are quite a few people who are perfectly capable of going out and buying the DVD or blueray or box set or what have you.

But some of us simply can’t and we resort to the only thing we can.

I have been living without a land lane, a cell phone or a net connection for over a year now.

Some people find those things critical to their day to day lives. They’re not. But they are very useful.

Sometimes I just want to watch an episode of my favorite TV show because I don’t have cable and can’t watch it on tv.

This is just my personal view on things. That’s all.

ditto. life sucks, that’s why we made distractions. until things get better, i can’t afford most of these distractions that have proved vital to keeping my mind from straying to self-harming thoughts as an escape from the suffering.

All About ACTA

It’s not over yet. #SOPA and #PIPA are one thing. The international version is #ACTA, the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement. The agreement has been signed, while existing mostly in secret, by most of the world, with notable exceptions including the EU.

The act is an attempt to create international standards for intellectual property rights enforcement.

You can look at what is assumed to be the current final form of the agreement, which has been leaked, here. The text has otherwise not been made public; in the US, a Freedom of Information Act request has been denied on the basis of classification for national security. Of course this information was not too classified for those who had a hand in creating the act, a group representing US-based multinational corporations which include International Intellectual Property Alliance (coalition of seven trade associations), The Gorlin Group (Washington “consultancy”)Time Warner Inc. (media company), Eli Lilly and Company (pharmaceutical company)Cisco Systems, Inc. (consumer electronics)The U.S.-China Business Council (nonprofit org), Anheuser-Busch Companies, Inc. (beer), Merck & Co., Inc. (healthcare), National Foreign Trade Council, Inc. (business organization), Sidley, Austin, Brown & Wood LLP (representing the biotechnology industry), Entertainment Software Association (computer and video games), CropLife America (crop protection and pest control products), Global Intellectual Property Strategy Center (consulting service representing gauge-manufacturers Thomas G. Faria Corporation), Recording Industry Association of America (recording industry trade org), IBM Corporation (technology), Intellectual Property Owners Association (trade association for owners of patents, trademarks, copyrights and trade secrets), Motion Picture Association of America, Inc. (movies), John Wiley and Sons, Inc. (publishers), General Motors Corporation (automobiles).

And that was just the Industry Trade Advisory Committee On Intellectual Property Rights that was involved. There are three other other committees, totaling 93 other members of the business elite who have access to the “classified” details of the act we as citizens are not allowed to see, for our own security.

This video is a chart.

A visual explanation.

The bills have been shelved for now, but they are far from gone. Educate yourselves with the time we’ve been given. Whether they have been postponed for a chance to rally more support that outnumbers the opposition, or for the off chance that they are dropped for good, spreading the word never hurts.
